How Can We Believe in a God that We Can't See?

Updated: Apr 3, 2023

"And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him."

How are we expected to believe in a God that we can't even see?

I've heard this question asked recently by one who doubted that God truly exists. The way we can respond to those who have this doubt is by sharing with them what the Bible says about faith. Scripture tells us that we should live by faith and not by sight (2 Cor. 5:7). Furthermore, it says that it is impossible to please God without faith (Heb. 11:6). So, it's clear that having faith is necessary for approaching God. Faith is described as having "confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see." (Hebrews 11:1 NIV). It's first simply believing that God exists despite not being able to see Him. Faith doesn't contradict using reasoning, but it does often go beyond reasoning. It looks like the shedding off of trying to find "proof" that God exists and instead deciding to trust what His Word reveals about Him. It's being assured of God's goodness even when times are hard. Furthermore, it can look like having confidence that God is still present even when He seems silent. Believing that God exists and letting go of trying to approach Him based on reason alone is the first step to getting to know Him. Once that first step of faith is taken, those seeking God can be assured that He will grant them the ability to have a relationship with Him through His Son, Jesus Christ. And, no one who goes to Jesus will by any means be cast out (John 6:37, 40).

God, please increase our faith. Please, help those doubting to understand that You are real even though they can't see You. Open their eyes to You, God, and help them to trust in what Your Word says about You. Thank You for Your steadfast love and goodness.

In Jesus' Name, I pray, amen.
