What Benefits Will I Get From Following Jesus?

Updated: Apr 3, 2023

"Then Jesus told his disciples, 'If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.'"

"What benefits will I get from following Jesus?"...

This question could possibly be asked by those who follow a prosperity gospel that preaches wealth and material blessings as the reward for having faith in God. Contemplating following Jesus based solely on what benefits may come from it isn't looking at following Him in the right light. We should approach Jesus knowing that the best thing that will come from doing so is, in fact, Jesus Himself and a relationship with God the Father. In following Him, we are giving Lordship over our lives to the One who loved each one of us enough to take our sins upon Himself and die for us on the cross ( Is. 53:5, John 15:13, Rom. 5:8, Gal. 2:20 ). By surrendering to Him, we gain the One who loves us more than any other person in the world ever could. Through His love and His sacrifice, we receive salvation from our sins and eternal life where we will spend eternity with Him and God ( John 3:16; 14:1-3, Rom. 6:23 ).

Choosing whether to accept or reject Jesus isn't a trivial matter. It's important to remember that there are consequences for those who reject Him. Those who reject Jesus are under God's wrath ( John 3:36 ), don't receive forgiveness for their sins, and will be punished for their sins with eternal punishment in the lake of fire ( Rev. 20:11-15 ). There is no way around this except through having that personal relationship with Christ ( John 14:6 ).

Q: When have you been tempted to go to God only seeking to receive something from Him?

God, thank You for the life that is in Your Son, Jesus Christ, and thank You for making salvation available to us through Him. Help us to seek You for You, God, and give us the desire to know You more. Help us not to go to You only seeking to receive, but to seek You out of love for You. Thank You for Your goodness.

In Jesus' Name, I pray, amen.
