The Test of Our Motives

(5/30/23)

"All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord."

Everyone would like to consider themselves a good person. There may even be some who confidently claim the title of being so. However, if our own moral standard is the basis by which we assess ourselves, we can deceive ourselves when it comes to our own uprightness. As Proverbs 16:2 states, it is the tendency of man to excuse his own actions as being right and good; even when they are wrong. We are not capable of evaluating ourselves thoroughly. God Himself sets the moral standard and He determines the purity of our motives. It is only by examining ourselves through the lens of Scripture that we will be able to determine whether our actions are truly right or wrong.

God, Creator of the heavens and the earth, please test the motives of my heart and help me to examine myself in the light of Your Word. Humble me before You and help me to submit myself to Your standard of right and wrong.

In Jesus' Name, I pray, Amen.
