Surrendering Your Way for God's Way

Updated: Apr 3, 2023

The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps

It can be very easy for us to start planning out what we want our "next steps" to be in life without first praying to God and letting Him direct us in the way to go. This can lead us to get caught up in moving by what we think is right rather than going by what God actually wants us to do. Upon seeing this, God may interrupt our plans and put us in a new direction. It may be frustrating and discouraging knowing that God is closing doors on the vision you had for your life, but you can be confident that God's plan for your life exceeds whatever you may have had planned. God can use these interruptions to test the genuineness of our faith. When we are faced with having to choose between our plan and the plan God has for us, which way will we choose? Even if our plan seems like it would be best at the time, it is essential to remember that God knows what is best for us and that His ways surpass ours ( Isaiah 55:9 ). Following His direction will bring continual purpose into our lives and will ensure that the work we do has an impact that could last for generations.

When God interrupts your plans in exchange for His own, it’s important that you:

  • Surrender any frustration with the change you have to God and meditate on His goodness

  • Listen to where He is trying to guide you and be obedient to go even if you don't understand why He wants you there

  • Trust that His plan for your life is greater than whatever you had imagined and thank Him for what He is doing in your life

  • Remember that God will be with you no matter what

God, You are good. Thank You for the plan that You have for my life. Please help me to trust You with where You are leading me to go and help me to obey Your commands. Help me to remember that Your ways are higher than my ways and that it is better to follow You than to go my own way. Please be glorified through my obeying You and use me to draw others to You.

In Jesus' Name, I pray, amen.
