“'You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.'"
Jesus expects His disciples to be like salt to the earth. Salt was a valuable commodity used as a seasoning and as a preservative to prevent foods from spoiling quickly. When speaking of His disciples as being salt, Jesus meant that His disciples were to add flavor to the world. Additionally, they were to be a preserving agent to prevent the world from going into complete moral and spiritual decay. A warning accompanied the responsibility of having the role of salt. Jesus warned the listening crowd that if they were to lose their flavor as salt, they would be useless as Christians. Christians may "lose their flavor" when their actions and words resemble that of an unbeliever rather than those of Jesus. After all, the ability to preserve the world from decay would be lost if believers partake in the very sin that spoils it. In order to stay useful, believers must persistently flee from sin and obey Jesus' teachings. Only then, we can be the salt that Jesus describes.
God, Creator of the heavens and the earth, please help me to fulfill the role of being salt in this world. Guide me in following Jesus' teachings and in walking in His footsteps. Teach me to obey His commands and help me to get rid of any sin in my life that I haven't yet repented of. Thank you for all that you do for us.
In Jesus' Name, I pray, Amen.
