(5) "For you have been my hope, Sovereign Lord, my confidence since my youth.
(6) From birth I have relied on you; you brought me forth from my mother’s womb.
I will ever praise you. (7) I have become a sign to many; you are my strong refuge.
(8) My mouth is filled with your praise, declaring your splendor all day long."
In Psalm 71, the Psalmist calls on God for refuge and deliverance from those who want to harm him. In the midst of calling on God for help, the Psalmist also praises God for being his hope and confidence since his youth. Psalm 71 paints a beautiful picture of praise and dependence on God that we should all seek to imitate. Surely we have a good and faithful God who is always present no matter what we are going through. Similar to how the Psalmist viewed God, we can look to God as our refuge and Rock in times of trouble. Before going to anyone or anything else, we have the blessing through Jesus Christ of going to the Creator of all things for help. We can trust that God listens to our prayers as He works to accomplish His will and glorify Himself through our situation. In the meantime, we can learn from the example of the Psalmist and devote ourselves to praising God for who He is in the midst of our trials. Take time today to praise God for His goodness, faithfulness, and deliverance. Praise Him for all that He's done for you in the past, what He is doing for you and for others in the present, and for what He will do in the future according to His Word. Let's imitate the Psalmist and let our mouths be filled with God's praise so that we can declare His splendor all day long (Psalm 71:8).
God, Creator of the heavens and the earth, thank You for all that You do for me. Help me to praise You for who You are and for all that You've done. Help me to glorify You and remind me of who You are. Be glorified through me, please, and help me to trust in You.
In Jesus' Name, I pray, amen.
