"Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right."
As I go through my days, I constantly have to reflect on this command. I often find it hard to obey my mom when I'm told what to do and find myself fighting the urge to talk back to her. Moreover, the feelings of annoyance and resentment that arise in these situations only make my attitude worse as they distract me from responding to her in the way that God would want me to. The main way I've been able to overcome these feelings is through prayer and meditating on verses such as this one. God expects His followers to obey and honor their earthly parents. Although it may be hard to do at times, we will be pleasing God by doing so. It's also helpful to remember that Jesus was submissive to His earthly parents too ( Luke 2:51 ). If Jesus, though being the Son of God, chose to humble Himself and submit Himself to Mary and Joseph, then we should be willing to obey our parents as well.
Q: When do you find it challenging to obey your parents?
Q: What are some ways that you can work to better honor your parents in the Lord?
God, Creator of the heavens and the earth, please help me to better obey my parents. Help me to honor them for Your glory and to respect them. Please, give me the humility to obey them without grumbling or complaining as well.
In Jesus' Name, I pray, amen.
