Contentment in Knowing Christ

Updated: Apr 3, 2023

'Whom have I in heaven but you?

And earth has nothing I desire besides you.'

Similar to how God doesn't promise believers the ability to live to old age or to accumulate great wealth, being married or having a significant other isn't necessarily promised for our lives. It could be that Jesus comes back before we have the chance to be married. Or, we could die and join Jesus in heaven earlier than we anticipated. God reminding me of this helped me to refocus my heart on the fact that the most important relationship in my life should be my relationship with Him. This is important to remember because Jesus tells us that we are to love Him before all others ( Matt. 10:37; Luke 14:26 ). This means that whether single or in a relationship, God expects us to keep Him first and to be fully devoted to Him.

I didn't understand before, but one aspect of being content in singleness is the ability to be satisfied in Christ even if we don't get the chance to marry. The Psalmist of the 73rd psalm felt this contentment in knowing God when he expressed that he had no desire for anything on earth besides God. He didn't set his heart on marriage nor on waiting for "the one". Rather, he was fixed on God and was pleased to know Him. Once we get into a position where we are able to recognize that God is the Only One we should truly set our hearts on in this world, we will be able to delight in Him before all other things in the same way that the Psalmist did. Furthermore, if it is in God's will for us to enter into a relationship, we will be able to enter with our hearts fixed on God.

Q: What is your heart set on? And, if your life were to be cut short, where would your heart be?

Seek to set your heart back on only One who is able to satisfy it. If you have Him, you lack nothing.
