(10) "But the day of the Lord will come as unexpectedly as a thief. Then the heavens will pass away with a terrible noise, and the very elements themselves will disappear in fire, and the earth and everything on it will be found to deserve judgment. (11) Since everything around us is going to be destroyed like this, what holy and godly lives you should live, (12) looking forward to the day of God and hurrying it along. On that day, he will set the heavens on fire, and the elements will melt away in the flames. (13) But we are looking forward to the new heavens and new earth he has promised, a world filled with God’s righteousness."
Where is your focus as a Christian? Is it on the worries, dreams, desires, and expectations you have for this life or is it on the promised life to come in eternity? As Christians, it is important to remember that our lives on earth are temporary. When we disregard this truth, apathy, and laziness can surface as the distractions of life weaken our devotion to God's Kingdom.
In his letter to Christians of the Early Church, Peter speaks of Jesus' Second Coming. He states that the day of the Lord will come like a thief upon all people; both Christians and Non-Christians alike (v.10). Since Jesus' return will be at a time in which no one expects, we should not be ignorant to assume that Jesus won't come back in our lifetime. If we do so, we will be in danger of obtaining the same mindset of mockers who have no faith in His impending return
( 2 Pet. 3:1-4 ). Focusing on the promise of Jesus' return will enable us to keep an eternal perspective as we go through this life. It will give us that ability to look past our lives here as we remember that this world as we know it won't last forever. As you go through each day, keep eternity in mind and set yourself to do God's will. This way, you can be as productive as possible for God's Kingdom.
God, please help me not to let the pleasures of life distract me from eternity. Keep in my mind the truth that this world and everything in it will pass away. Thank You for the hope of eternity given through Jesus.
In Jesus' Name, I pray, Amen.
